Best-selling American author to bring one-woman play “The God Box: A Daughter’s Story” to Ireland in aid of IHF and Milford Care Centre

Best-selling American author and successful businesswoman Mary Lou Quinlan is bringing her emotional one-woman play “The God Box: A Daughter’s Story” to Ireland in aid of the Irish Hospice Foundation and Milford Care Centre in Limerick.

Based on her powerful New York Times bestselling memoir of the same name, Quinlan shares her personal journey exploring the laughter and tears of a family in love, in loss and in triumph. This heart wrenching play tells how after her mother’s death Mary Lou discovered “God Boxes”, small containers stuffed with tiny notes sharing her mother’s innermost thoughts as she battled cancer. They revealed her concerns about her kids’ demanding careers, to private wishes for people she’d never even met, to concerns about her own health and everything in between.Scribbled in supermarket queues, restaurants, and at home, the notes were the ultimate expression of letting go. Through the journey, Mary Lou discovers her own more empathetic, more engaged self — the woman her mother had believed in all along.

The play will be performed in The Pavilion Theatre, Dun Laoghaire, on Wednesday June 17th and The Limetree Theatre, Limerick, on Saturday June 20th.

First presented as a workshop in New York City’s Irish Repertory Theatre in November 2011, the show has been performed all over the USA and packed out 24 performances at the prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2014.

Along the way the God Box Project has helped communities, raising over $250,000 for cancer, hospice, education, family and community causes.

Sharon Foley, CEO of The Irish Hospice Foundation, said she was a absolutely thrilled that Mary Lou Quinlan was bringing this special one-woman performance to Ireland, and that proceeds will go to The hospice Foundation and Milford Care Centre.

“This is a very powerful and moving account of how a woman prepared for her end of life in a unique way – writing down her innermost thoughts as they arose. We all let go in different ways and this was Mary Lou’s mothers way of coping and setting out her inner most thoughts. With the notes she left a wonde3rful lasting legacy for her family.”

“We thank Mary Lou for her generosity in agreeing to donate the proceeds from the performances to the hospice movement. Her support is very much appreciated and we hope people take the opportunity to see this emotional performance.”

Mary Lou is a longtime advertising executive and women’s marketing consultant and founder and CEO of the marketing consultancy Just Ask a Woman and Mary Lou Quinlan & Co.
