Tax Efficient Giving
Donations to charity from tax payers are eligible for tax relief in Ireland. This means that The Irish Hospice Foundation is able to increase the value of their donations by as much as 45% at no extra cost to our donors so long as the annual value of the donation is €250 or more.
This is a valuable source of income for The Irish Hospice Foundation and has generated more than €900,000 since the Revenue Commissioners first introduced the scheme.
- It will NOT cost you a single cent.
- It will NOT affect your personal finances or tax status.
- There are NO catches.
DONATIONS MADE after 1st January 2013
Following the 2013 budget, some changes have been made to the tax relief scheme on charitable donations. Donations of €250 or over in 2013 and onwards are eligible for tax relief regardless whether you are a PAYE Tax Payer or Self-Assessed.
A new “blended” rate of 31% will be applied to all donations of €250 and more regardless of the donor’s actual tax rate, thus valuing all donations from the public equally. That means that your donation of €250 is actually worth €362 to The Irish Hospice Foundation – at no extra cost to you!
There is no change to Corporate Tax Relief – companies continue to treat donations as a normal business expense and there is no upper limit to the amount that can be donated.
To enable The Irish Hospice Foundation to reclaim the tax, you must complete a CHY3 Certificate (<– click to view/download)
We have also developed CHY3 Certificate Information Leaflet to help you complete the form correctly.
Donations made up to and including 31st December 2012
- PAYE TAX PAYERS
If you were a PAYE Tax Payer in 2012 and gave €250 or more to The Irish Hospice Foundation within a single tax year we can reclaim the tax paid on your donation(s).
- If you paid tax at the standard rate (20%), a €250 donation to The Irish Hospice Foundation is actually worth €312.50 as we are able to reclaim €62.50 from the Revenue Commissioners
- If you paid tax at the higher rate (41%), a €250 donation is worth €423.73 to us as we are able to reclaim €173.73 from the Revenue Commissioners
To enable The Irish Hospice Foundation to reclaim the tax, you must complete a CHY2 Certificate (<–click to view/download)
We have also developed CHY2 Form Factsheet to help you complete the form correctly.
- SELF-ASSESSED AND/OR SELF-EMPLOYED DONORS
If you are self-assessed for tax, your donation is still eligible for tax relief so long as it was for €250 or more within a single tax year. However, The Irish Hospice Foundation is unable to reclaim it on your behalf.
In order to claim tax relief on your donation you need to attach your acknowledgement receipt from The Irish Hospice Foundation to your self-assessment tax return. Many of our donors who pay tax this way donate the reclaimed tax back to us. If you would like to do this please contact Anna Sadlier on 01 679 3188 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
- CORPORATE DONORS
Corporate donors who give €250 or more in any single tax year are able to claim a deduction for the donation as if it were a trading expense.
