How to Access Specialist Palliative Care

Access to palliative care services varies across the country. Many people involved in a patient's care may suggest that referral to Specialist Palliative Care team may be helpful, these include:

  • Patient
  • Family members
  • Doctors
  • Nurses
  • Allied Health Professionals
  • Social worker
  • Member of Clergy

Following discussion with the person living with the illness and/or their carers the primary doctor (G.P or main consultant) will usually send a palliative care team referral and a review will be arranged.

The primary doctor (G.P or main consultant) may seek input from the SPC team at any point throughout the lifespan of a condition, for a range of symptoms or issues, some of which are listed below.

  • Pain
  • Pressure sores
  • Swallowing difficulties
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Constipation
  • Reduced appetite
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
