Enhancing compassionate end-of-life care in residential care centres
About the CEOL Programme
The CEOL (Compassionate End of Life) Programme was developed to support staff to continuously review and enhance the culture of person-centred end-of-life care in their residential care centre. Beginning with the ‘What Matters to Me’ workshop, the program ensures staff have the opportunity to explore end-of-life care from a personal, societal and organisational perspective, and enhance their communications skills with residents and their families. Building on this base, the ‘CEOL Review Process’ workshop gives staff the skills to facilitate CEOL review meetings after the death of a resident, which provide support to staff who cared for the resident and create a space for review and reflection on the care provided. The second part of this process involves inviting feedback from bereaved relatives and friends three months after the death of a resident.
The establishment of a multidisciplinary CEOL Committee ensures learning from the review process is translated into action, where a need for change is identified. This program is rolled out through 2 full day and 1 half day workshops. Ongoing support for CEOL facilitators is available to residential care centres who wish to continue with the process.
Who is this programme for ?
This program is designed for all residential care centres who wish to enhance and develop their culture of person-centred end-of-life care. Staff are supported to enhance their communication skills with residents and families around end-of-life care, and to implement the Compassionate End of Life (CEOL) Review Process. It is suitable for all staff working in residential care settings (nursing, healthcare assistant, catering, housekeeping etc.). For large centres, it is recommended that multiple What Matters To Me workshops are delivered, ensuring a larger number of staff have the opportunity to engage with the program.
The programme comprises three workshops.
Workshop 1: What Matters To Me
Workshop 2 : CEOL Review Process
- Seeing things from a resident’s perspective – what matters most to each individual
- Exploration of what is involved in good end-of-life care
- Communication with residents about future wishes and end-of-life care
- Communication with family members about end-of-life care
- How to support residents when they are dying
Workshop 3: Action Meeting
- Facilitating multidisciplinary CEOL review meetings after the death of a resident
- In-depth exploration of the nine domains of care that impact on the quality of end-of-life care
- The role of staff support in end-of-life care
- Contacting bereaved relatives and friends
- Closing the quality improvement loop
- Maintaining the integrity of the CEOL Review Process
- Transforming learning into action
At the end of this program participants will have:
- Established a CEOL Committee with the knowledge and skills to drive continuous quality improvement in end-of-life care in their residential care centre
- Reflected on end-of-life care from a personal, organisational and resident’s perspective
- Developed an understanding of providing person centred end-of-life care
- Enhanced their skills for talking with patients and family members about end-of-life care
- Enhanced their skills in supporting residents and family members at end-of-life
- Consulted with a wide range of staff and residents in their residential care centre on end-of-life care Facilitated a CEOL review meeting with staff after the death of a resident
- The knowledge and confidence necessary to invite feedback from bereaved families through the use of the Bereaved Relatives and Friends Questionnaire
- An understanding of some of the dynamics of implementing change
- Implemented change on a personal, team and/or organisational level, as appropriate
Category 1 accreditation is being sought from the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Ireland for the CEOL Programme.
20 hours – 2 full-day and 1 half-day workshops
€2000 plus standard IHF travel expenses (70c per mile plus cost of an overnight stay if required).
