–PROJECT COMPLETED UNDER THE DESIGN AND DIGNITY GRANTS SCHEME –
Two Family and Viewing Rooms in the Emergency Department in St James’s Hospital, Dublin were today (16th May) formally opened by Professor Patrick Plunkett, Consultant in Emergency Medicine at St. James’s. These new rooms offer a private and comfortable space for families when their loved one is critically ill or has died.
The St. James’s Hospital Emergency Department deals with the families of many patients who die suddenly often due to unforeseen causes and often in tragic circumstances. Their loved ones are frequently in shock and traumatised. Hospital staff utilise the rooms to break difficult news to families in privacy, provide care to the bereaved and repose the deceased in a dignified space.
The refurbishment of the rooms was facilitated by a €90,000 grant from the Design and Dignity Grants Scheme initiated by the Irish Hospice Foundation’s (IHF) Hospice Friendly Hospitals Programme in partnership with the Health Service Executive (HSE). The rooms provide a space for privacy and calm in a busy Emergency Department, with comfortable, contemporary furniture, original glass artwork by Michelle O’Donnell and daylight filtered through circular skylights.
