A Compassionate Community approach in Bereavement. A Family Resource Centre collaboration

This project was an initiative by South Dublin Bereavement Network.

A compassionate community approach plays an important role in supporting anyone who has been bereaved. This includes compassion from family, friends and those we have incidental interactions with throughout our day, such as at the welfare office, bank or with a home care worker. This project aimed to enhance the compassionate community approach to two cohorts of bereaved, those bereaved in older age and bereaved children, which the network deemed were impacted disproportionately during COVID. The network hosted an online bereavement information for anyone working with people in older age and two in-person public information events in collaboration with local Family Resource Centres.

Is grief in older age different? An information event for those working with people in older age

Guest speaker, Jennifer Allen, Senior Social Worker practicing in an older adult mental health service spoke about the understandings of bereavement (how it can affect us, what can help, how you can support others) and ways bereavement can affect those in older age.

Some aspects that attendees found most helpful included, information on the way grief may impact the older person, general bereavement information, the keynote speaker sharing her practical experience through the session and particular aspects of bereavement theory, such theories of grief.
