We are collaborating with Poetry Ireland on a collection of poetry to bring solace and comfort to those grieving and those facing the end of life.
We are a national charity that addresses dying, death and bereavement. Poetry Ireland connects people and poetry, with a commitment to achieving excellence in the reading, writing and performance of poetry throughout the island of Ireland.
Both recognise poetry offers a means to navigate great loss. Poems offer words when words fail us. This is particularly true under the uncertainty of COVID-19, when many losses, great and small, are ongoing.
Early Irish poems and prayers often focused on a “good death”. Across centuries poems from all cultures explore death, grief and dying. This could be the loss of a loved one or the passing of a child, unexpected sudden loss or self-reflection facing mortality. We are developing an anthology of poetry which draws upon this accumulated resource and which all people can reach for in their time of need.
