Forum on End-of-Life in Ireland – History



• October – announcement that Forum on End-of-Life in Ireland was being set up


• 9th January – call for submissions to the Forum

• 20th February – deadline for written submissions to the Forum

• 11th March – Inaugural session of the Forum on End-of-Life in Ireland at the Royal Hospital Kilmainham opened by President Mary McAleese and chaired by RTE’s Marian Finucane. Address delivered by Dr Maurice Manning, President of the Irish Human Rights Commission.

• 16th September: public talk by Professor Allan Kellehear of the Centre for Death & Society at Bath University on death in contemporary society and the need for death education.


• January – April: Consultation process for the draft Forum report

• April: Final report published

• May : National Council of the Forum on end of Life in Ireland holds its first meeting and develops the work plan


• June: Workshop on financial issues at end of life

• June: Think Ahead tested with focus groups of members of the public

• July-September: The first pilot of Think Ahead takes place with GPs and their patients in Dublin

• Forum 2011 takes place on 12th October in Croke Park where An Taoiseach Enda Kenny formally launches the concept of “Think Ahead”

• 14 October: Charles Leadbeater, policy analyst and political advisor of the Demos thinktank in the UK, speaks on policy issues related to end of life at a briefing organised by the Forum

• December: Baseline study looking at behaviours and motivations of Irish people with regard to advance planning is carried out by Amarach Research


• Review of the work of the Forum

• The second pilot of Think Ahead takes place coordinated by Dr Brendan O’Shea, GP and Associated Professor of the Trinity College Dublin GP Training Scheme

• 6th June public meeting on Do Not Attempt Resuscitation

• 26th June– public meeting on organ donation

• Forum input into International Conference on Emergency Medicine in Dublin

• September-November: regional pilot programmes for Think Ahead in Limerick and South


• Workshop on the physical environment

• Advocacy work to promote legislation on Advance Care Planning

• Further progress made on regulation of the Funeral Services Industry

• Development of a policy proposal on the pronouncement of death by senior nurses

• February: Think Ahead poster awarded a prize at the Irish Association of Palliative Care conference

• April: Presentation on Think Ahead given at international conference on health promoting palliative care, organised by Milford Care Centre and Limerick University

• April: Presentation on Think Ahead given at the British Medical Journal’s international forum in London

• A three year plan for the Forum on End of Life developed for 2013-2015

• Think Ahead research project in Kildare/West Wicklow being rolled out in Autumn 2013

• Forum 2013 ‘Length of Days – Quality of Life’ takes place on October 24th in Dublin Castle
