Practical & Legal Considerations

As well as the emotional and physical support that people may require when someone close to them is approaching death, there are several official and/or legal considerations that may also have to be taken care of, such as making a will, advanced directives, power of attorney, planning a funeral. The range of emotional, physical and practical issues that bereaved people face are considered in the booklet When A Loved One Dies, produced by the Hospice Friendly Hospitals programme.

Practical considerations

Immediately following a death there are number of official procedures that may need to be considered, including the requirement of a post mortem if the death was unexpected.

Financial supports

To help families meet the additional costs they may incur at this time, the Department of Social Protection has various payments available for people who have been bereaved. Citizens Information provides specific information on entitlements related to death and bereavement .
