The Irish Hospice Foundation is seeking applications from suitably qualified clinicians to join the expanding bereavement team as lead in Clinical Development.

This role is for a minimum of 3 days a week (with potential to be flexible) and will be based at the IHF’s offices on Nassau Street, Dublin 2. The successful candidate will be expected to be flexible.

Background

Since 1986, the Irish Hospice Foundation has incorporated a growing programme of bereavement support and education. In addition to our national development work (developing, in collaboration with stakeholders, the adult and children’s bereavement care pyramids and hosting the Irish Childhood Bereavement Network) we provide education and training up to postgraduate level (with our partners the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland). We house the Thérèse Brady Library, specialising in end of life and bereavement collections and we promote bereavement information for the public and professionals through a number of channels including our website www.bereaved.ie and a programme of talks ‘Living with Loss’ which are run across Ireland on an annual basis. The Irish Hospice Foundation was the first to focus on the complications that can accompany grief and established the Programme for Complicated Grief under the patronage of Dr Katherine Shear, University of Columbia and run by Dr Susan Delaney, who retired in 2019.

Our work in bereavement is guided by a pyramid model of care detailing normal range bereavement care for all, through to specialist therapeutic care for a minority of people. Over the next five years, the Irish Hospice Foundation will be consolidating its national role in supporting bereavements developments. It is in this context that we are calling for applications for the post of Clinical Development Coordinator (Bereavement).

Role and responsibilities

The role is wide-ranging but with specific responsibility for the following:


Leading clinical development and national capacity in bereavement care

  • Advising on and developing capacity for clinical guidance and related therapeutic models for assessment and treatment when bereavement becomes problematic.
  • Scoping further bereavement supports which may assist bereaved people and advising on best clinical approaches.
  • Supporting the development of outcome measures for bereavement care programmes.
  • Liaising and networking with professional therapeutic organisations and professional bodies to promote best practice in bereavement care.
  • Informing curricula, standards and practice guidance for bereavement care.


  • Advocating for appropriate therapeutic provision in bereavement care

  • Developing, in partnership with the senior management team and advocacy function, advocacy and policy positions on mental health and therapeutic aspects of bereavement care.
  • Prepare policy statements on bereavement-related clinical areas.


  • Education and training

  • Overseeing clinical aspects of RCSI postgraduate bereavement courses, convened at the Irish Hospice Foundation.
  • Providing in-house and external training and developing protocols for provision of bereavement support including telephone conversations, face to face consultation, therapeutic interventions.


  • Signposting

  • Supporting development and management of centralised signposting services in bereavement care.

  • Grants

  • Overseeing grant funding in therapeutic areas relating to bereavement including the Rosabel’s Room to Talk fund (parental grief).


  • Research

  • Maintaining an up-to-date knowledge of current developments in bereavement care and appraise clinical evidence in this area.
  • Supervise or co-supervise relevant research being commissioned or supported by IHF.


  • Support the organisation

  • Playing a full role as a member of the IHF in delivering overall strategic and operational leadership of the organisation and ensuring cross department collaboration.
  • Carrying out other roles or duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post, as requested by the Head of Head of Education and Bereavement.
  • Personal Experience, Skills and qualifications

    ESSENTIAL

    Professional credentials

  • Have an accredited professional qualification
  • Be a member of an appropriate professional body.


  • Experience

  • Have worked clinically with bereaved people for a minimum of three years
  • Have experience of working to evidence-based guidance
  • Have developed clinical assessments, clinical pathways and referral mechanisms.


  • Bereavement specific knowledge

  • Have pursued additional training in bereavement
  • Have an enthusiasm for improving bereavement care at national and local levels
  • Understand the roles played by many stakeholders in bereavement
  • Have familiarity with the pyramid of bereavement care concept and models.


  • Policy and strategy

  • Have a developed understanding of regulation and standards
  • Have a record in strategic developments at local or national level.


  • Organisational skills

  • Ability to work on own initiative and taking full responsibility for aspects of a project
  • Demonstrated ability to turn projects around with tight timeframes and deadlines
  • Excellent planning and organisation skills, budgeting and project management skills
  • Be an excellent team member with a respect for different disciplines and perspectives


  • Communication

  • Excellent communication skills – verbal and written
  • Sensitive and respectful communicator, ability to translate technical terms and use in plain English
  • Able to write and edit reports in a range of styles for a range of audiences
  • Able and willing to engage in media work.

  • Have an enthusiasm for improving bereavement care at national and local levels
  • Be committed to working through and with people to build these improvements

  • General

  • Be able to travel and have a clean driving license
  • Be able to be based in Dublin offices

  • Desirable

    The suitable applicant will ideally:

  • Have an understanding of working with bereaved children
  • Have completed training and worked therapeutically in the area of prolonged/complicated grief
  • Have conducted research/ prepared research publications
  • Have qualification and experience in clinical supervision.
  • Reporting

    The successful candidate will be a member of the bereavement team and will report directly to the Head of Education and Bereavement

    Conditions

    The salary will be commensurate with experience. Office base is at the Irish Hospice Foundation, Nassau St, Dublin. This is a permanent post with a six-month probation period. Payment will be pro-rata based on appropriate scales.
