One of our Seed Grants projects, ‘Time-Lapse’, a solo exhibition by artist and poet Maria Noonan-McDermott, opens tomorrow.
Where: The Abbey Arts Centre, Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal
Opening: Thursday 10th February at 7pm, officiated by Councillor Justin Warnock
Duration: The exhibition will continue until March 14th and then tour
This exhibition is an emotive and heartwarming visual and literary presentation of an ongoing project that Maria has been unwittingly working towards over a number of years while helping care for her mother living with Alzheimer’s.
The last two years have been very challenging! Losing someone you love forces you to confront your own mortality. My work is a reflection of these trials and obstacles that face us everyday as I try to make sense of them in the only way I know how.
This is a very special exhibition, one that is very dear to my heart. It encompasses a large selection of paintings, original poetry and a sequence of installations using found heirlooms from my Mum’s private collection as a fashion designer circa 1959.”
Maria wished to create work of artistic merit, relevance and social consequence with the intention of touring to different venues and connecting with as many different audiences as possible. She has attempted to cross boundaries by engaging collaboratively with people in a distinct and powerful way, using art as a means of communicating and healing.
The exhibition will be followed by a series of talks and poetry readings. Representatives from The Alzheimer Society will be in attendance to give support and answer questions.
Dominic Campbell, Arts & Cultural Engagement Officer at Irish Hospice Foundation commented:
‘‘This exhibition presents the complex extended grief of Alzheimer’s with its untethering of time and the archaeological uncovering of the entire life of a parent that arrives with their death. All this creative exploration of grief, loss and love will be reflected through Maria’s paintings, her poetry and installation’’
Funding was awarded by Irish Hospice Foundation Seed Grants scheme, supported by The Creative Ireland Programme, with additional funding awarded by Leitrim County Council. Read more about Maria’s work on her web site.
